World Asthma Day

On May 6, 2014 we will be recognising World Asthma Day, to help raise awareness of asthma management and care in the community.

Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases in the world, affecting more than 300 million people worldwide[1].  Its symptoms vary over time and in form but include shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness, and coughing. Although asthma cannot be cured, it can be treated and controlled.

Through funding from the Department of Health and with the assistance of participating general practice clinics, we have established nurse-led asthma clinics within the Hobsons Bay and Wyndham communities to provide specialist asthma care.

“The purpose of the asthma nurse clinics is to provide more efficient, accessible and sustainable asthma care to patients in the community and subsequently reduce rates of presentations to emergency departments for asthma treatment,” says SWMML Nurse Clinic Project Coordinator, Marianne Del Papa.

Dr Kelly Davis from Tarneit Family Medical and Dental Centre in Wyndham is proud to be one of the first clinics to offer a nurse-led asthma clinic.

“The asthma clinic in Tarneit Family Medical and Dental Centre is run by our trained nurse and lead GPs. Our lead doctors have a keen interest in the management of asthma hence this pioneering clinic being offered to all asthma patients in the area.

“Our nurse conducting the asthma clinic is a certified asthma educator and trained in conducting lung function tests, as well as assisting patients to manage their asthma well and reach their full potential in life's day-to-day activities.

“In offering this service, the clinical staff of Tarneit Family Medical and Dental Centre continue our commitment to care for the community of Wyndham,” Dr Davis says.

For information on managing asthma or to treat your symptoms speak to your local doctor. Alternatively, visit our website shortly for a full list of local practices participating in the nurse-led asthma clinics.
