Quality use of medicine(QUM)

The quality use of medicines means when choosing suitable medicines to treat illness and maintain health that consideration be given to

  •  the individual
  •  the illness
  •  the risk vs the benefits
  •  the dosage and the length of treatment time
  •  any co – existing therapies
  •  costs for the individual, the community and the health system

Medicine can include prescription, non-prescription and complementary medicines

The aim of the national strategy for the quality use of medicines is to make the best possible use of medicines to improve health outcomes for all Australians.

By providing an integrated approach to treatment options and considering treatment options wisely, there may be better ways than medicine to treating illness and maintaining health.

Many people successfully manage their health without medicines and for others the use of medicines is an important part of maintaining health, preventing illness and curing disease.

The QUM program is supported by the Home Medicine Review program
